Let’s dive into what this month’s Amazing Clubs delivery brought:

This month’s Amazing Clubs delivery arrived in a sturdy cardboard box with an insert that kept the precious cargo in place. Because I was at work when Canada Post tried to deliver, I had to pick this box up from the post office and show ID as they required a signature from someone 18+. I received two bottles of wine, one red, one white.

Each monthly delivery includes their informative beer lover’s newsletter, “A Bunch of Grapes”, featuring information about the monthly selections, winemaker profiles, tasting notes, histories of the featured wineries, and more!!

It looks like this month’s Amazing Clubs delivery contains wines from two featured European wineries! Humberto Canale from Argentina and Laurent Miquel from France – these are both new to me.

Let’s explore our first featured winery:

Humberto Canale Winery – Rio Negro Valley, Argentina

“Agricultural engineer Humberto Canale founded his namesake winery in Patagonia in 1909 and the company has played a pioneering role in southern Argentinian winemaking for more than a century. This is an arid region that relies on irrigation from the Rio Negro to support agriculture. From space, the Black River appears as a green thread of farmland snaking its way through the brown desert. At 39 degrees southern latitude, Canale’s vineyards lie in one of the world’s most southerly wine regions. It is a cool-climate region that produces wines more delicate than those found in Mendoza. Nearby Antarctica has a strong cooling effect on the climate and the fierce winds of Patagonia keep the vines pest-free. Intensely sunny days and chilly nights (‘diurnal variation’, in wine geek parlance) allow for slow and consistent ripening of grapes, every vintage.”

Humberto Canale Estate Pinot Noir – 2018

“An attractive garnet colour. It is delicate in body, with soft tannins and ripe red fruit flavour and a persistent finish. Pair this Pinot no war with beef stew, cedar plank salmon or mushroom risotto.”

This wine was juicy, tasty and surprisingly fresh though I found it to have a tobacco or stronger oak finish.

Laurent Miquel Winery – Languedoc-Roussillon, France

“Laurent and his team strive daily to constantly improve the quality of all their wines. Their focus is concentrated at the beginning of the winemaking cycle, ie. on the vines themselves. Although Languedoc has achieved enormous quality advances, particularly over the last fifteen to twenty years, Laurent believes that possibilities for further improvement lie firmly in the area of vineyard management. The use of Culture Raisonée (this term was recently described by Jancis Robinson as ‘verging on organic viticulture’) is applied to vine growing in all Laurent’s estates. Laurent also believes strongly in the benefits of intervention by local and international specialists in areas such as irrigation, soil analysis and canopy management.

Laurent does not believe in heavy intervention by the winemaker. Noble grapes from low yielding vines on the appropriate terroir should require minimal intervention to produce fine wine. While Laurent believes strongly that quality oak selection and the use of appropriate modern and traditional winemaking techniques can add an element of consistency and character, ultimately a truly fine wine is the result of a year-long intervention at the vineyard.”

Vendanges Nocturnes Blanc – 2018

“Elegant pale straw colour. Aromas of grapefruits lemon peel with a delicate floral overtone. A well balanced, lively white wine with superb freshness. Try this selection with a cobb salad, a souffle or spaghetti with anchovy carbonara.”

I would highly recommend this crisp, dry wine as it was easy to drink. It had some floral notes and a citrus flavour. It held up on its own and complimented my charcuterie board nicely.

The December Wine of the Month Club box from Amazing Clubs included two European wines, one from France and the other from Argentina. I really enjoyed both bottles, and I was excited that I did not have to do the shopping for them! This Amazing Clubs box costs $65.95 (or less on longer subscriptions), so it works out to around $32.98 per bottle, including free shipping! For nice, quality wines the price is fair. If you love sampling new wines as I do, this subscription might be right for you. Or how about a gift for the wine aficionado person in your life?
I cannot wait to see what else Amazing Clubs has to offer!
