Book of the Month Review June 2018

Book of the Month is a monthly book subscription box. Every month they release 5 new books which they have narrow down from hundreds of new releases (so you don’t have to). Books are announced on the first of the month, and members have six days to decide which book they would like to receive. Monthly subscriptions include one book, but members can purchase up to two additional books each month for $9.99 per title. They kindly sent us this box for review.

I don’t know about you, but shopping for new books to read has a tendency to exhaust me. There are way too many choices and not enough time to research them all. Just walking in to a book store gives me anxiety. There are books everywhere…..lots of them……it’s hard to even know where to start. So…..Book of the Month really is the perfect subscription for me. They choose the books, send you 5 options, and all you have to do is pick one out of the five…….easy peasy!

Here’s a look at my June selection….

The Book of Essie by Meghan MacLean Weir

Esther Ann Hicks–Essie–is the youngest child on Six for Hicks, a reality television phenomenon. She’s grown up in the spotlight, both idolized and despised for her family’s fire-and-brimstone brand of faith. When Essie’s mother, Celia, discovers that Essie is pregnant, she arranges an emergency meeting with the show’s producers: Do they sneak Essie out of the country for an abortion? Do they pass the child off as Celia’s? Or do they try to arrange a marriage–and a ratings-blockbuster wedding? Meanwhile, Essie is quietly pairing herself up with Roarke Richards, a senior at her school with a secret of his own to protect. As the newly formed couple attempt to sell their fabricated love story to the media–through exclusive interviews with an infamously conservative reporter named Liberty Bell–Essie finds she has questions of her own: What was the real reason for her older sister leaving home? Who can she trust with the truth about her family? And how much is she willing to sacrifice to win her own freedom?

Book of the Month Review June 2018 – Final Thoughts

For my June Book of the Month selection I went with The Book of Essie by MacLean Weir. This one grabbed my attention because of the interesting story line and the fact that it appears to have a bit of a Young Adult vibe to it. I was also intrigued by some of the reviews it received on Goodreads. This review in particular made me want to dive in to the book – “I can’t help but sum this up as a mosh of The Duggers and V.C. Andrews Flowers in the Attic with the tone and readability of Little Fires Everywhere. A quick read – engaging, enjoyable and unique. A good beach read!”. I was obsessed with V.C. Andrews when I was a teen so how could I not give this book a go?! I’m hoping to spend the entire day reading on Sunday so hopefully this book has an interesting first few chapters and keeps me wanting more.

XOXO
