We received two boxes from BookCase Club this month.  This is one of the two…

The Darkest Part of the Forest – Holly Black

In the woods is a glass coffin.  And in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives.

Hazel and her brother, Ben, life in Fairfold, where humans and the Folk exist side by side.  Since they were children, Hazel and Ben have been telling each other stories about the boy in the glass coffin: that he is a prince and they are valiant knights.  But as Hazel grows up, she puts aside those stories.  Hazel knows the horned boy will never wake.

Until one day he does…

Ok, so I just randomly flipped to a page and started reading to get a feel for the style of writing, as I often do with unknown books, and I’m hooked!  haha!  I think this one will be going to the top of my reading pile.

Newt’s Emerald – Garth Nix

Truthful leaned forward eagerly, before deliberately slowing herself.  Taking a little half breath, half gasp, she carefully untied the gold drawstring of the small velvet bag.  That successfully done, she reached inside and pulled out. . . The Emerald.

On her eighteenth birthday, Lady Truthful, nicknamed “Newt”, will inherit her family’s treasure: the Newington Emerald.  A dazzling heart-shaped gem, the Emerald also bestows its wearer with magical powers.

When the Emerald disappears one stormy night, Newt sets off to recover it.  Her plan entails dressing up as a man, mustache included, as no well-bred young lady should be seen out and about on her own.  While in disguise, Newt encounters the handsome but shrewd Mayor Harnett, who volunteers to help find the missing Emerald under the assumption that she is a man.  Once she and her unsuspecting ally are caught up in a dangerous adventure that includes an evil sorceress, Newt realizes that something else is afoot: the beating of her heart.

This book sounds captivating and I can’t wait to start it!  It’s exactly the type of book that I just love beach bingeing on.

BookCase Club June 2017 – Final Thoughts

Last month was a bit of a miss for BookCase Club as far at the genres went, but this month more than makes up for it!  Both these books intrigue me and I can’t decide which one to start first.  Thankfully I’m a bit of a fast reader, so I don’t think it will be long before they are both devoured.  If you aren’t familiar with this subscription, but are big into reading, I highly recommend delving a bit deeper in what they have to offer.  Don’t like the books here?  No worries, you can choose from age specific, multiple genres, and even non-fiction.
