Unboxing the June 2024 Ivy Kids Kits

The June Ivy Kids Kits included the book, “Planting the Wild Garden” by Kathryn O Gallbraith. The theme of the box is always based around the book so we’ve got a lot of activities based around seeds and gardening. Such a fun topic!

This month’s box included 14 activities based around the theme! In this review, we’ll be highlighting 7 of them since there are so many, but we’ll include pictures of each one so you can get a sense for all the various activities. Here’s a closer look at what was included in the June Ivy Kids Kits box:

Planting the Wild Gardens by Kathryn O. Galbraith: This is a beautifully illustrated, award winning book that covers a lovely introduction to nature and all the many ways seeds are dispersed and evolved. It’s won the Parents’ Choice Awards along with several other notable awards.

The activities in the box, support the theme of the book and are plentiful!

Seeds on the Move Board Game

Move the seeds along the numbered path until you reach the end. Littles will engage in counting and identifying numbers on the spaces, while older kids can enjoy mental math to determine which number space his or her seed will land on. A great activity for counting and developing directionality.

Story Retelling

Using the material included, kids can create some of the elements from the story including trees with leaves and acorns, and painting animal cutouts. Using their new creations, they can recreate the events from the story, Planting the Wild Garden. Ivy Kids Kits included all the materials they would need for this activity, including the glue stick and paint!

Leaf Wind Chime

Another fun, tactile, creative activity. A raw windchime in the shape of a leaf was included and kids can paint it using the paint and paint brush included. This activity touches on science where kids can learn about wind power and what makes the windchime work. They also include questions on the instruction sheet that parents can ask their kids while they’re working on the project such as, “how does this chime work?” and “What do we need for the chime to make sound?” I really love how detailed the instructions are and how they make it easy for parents to help their kids develop skills as they’re working through the activities.

Paper Bag Fox

So cute! This project includes a bright orange paper bag and the boxy parts of a fox for kids to cut out and craft together. Everything is included (except for scissors of course), down to the cotton ball used for the tail! This is a great activity to encourage creativity and to learn more about how animals play a part in dispersing seeds throughout the forest. I just loved this one!

Blowing Seeds

This is a game where kids blow their seeds onto the lettered game board. Whatever letter their seed lands on is an opportunity to identify the letter, or come up with a word that starts with the letter they’ve landed on. Developing literacy, letter sounds, and vocabulary in a fun, engaging way!

Bird Seed Drop

I loved the little birds they included for this one, aren’t they so cute? This activity teaches little ones how birds help spread seeds by dropping them in other locations. To play this game, kids will clip a seed onto their bird and holding it about 12 inches above the board, will drop it down in an effort to hit the points on the target. It’s a great activity to identify numbers, count by 5’s, add, and learn about seed dispersal.

Planting Wildflowers

So many fun things, I couldn’t resist sharing more about this one because it’s kind of a two-part. First, in a previous activity, kids will learn to build a wooden planter and how to prepare soil. They will paint and decorate their planters and then use the included soil wafers to reconstitute them and prepare for planting.  Then, in the the planting activity, they can use the wildflower seed packet to plant their seeds, while learning about seeds, dispersal, and gardening.  How adorable is that?

Remaining Activities

Here’s a look at the remaining activities including designing a seed, seeds on the move, seed exploration (with real seeds!), connect 5 seeds board game, and seed tally and graphing.

Ivy Kids Kits June 2024 – Final Thoughts

My head is spinning with all of the incredible activities and projects that Ivy Kids Kits included in their June box.  It’s clearly a well-rounded box designed to teach a multitude of skills for kids at varying ages from preschool through early elementary.  I love that the activities were diverse and incorporated a healthy mix of math, vocabulary, science, literacy, art, and fine and gross motor skills.

It’s always so nice when boxes include all of the items needed for the projects, and Ivy Kids Kits is a great example of that.  They left no stone unturned and truly thought of everything, down to the toothpicks and cotton balls needed for a few of the activities.  The only thing I noticed that wasn’t included was scissors, which is such a common home staple, that I would expect every family would have that easily on hand.

This box provides enough activities to keep kids engaged and learning all summer long! I think it would be great for homeschool families as well who are looking to add some creative lessons to their curriculum.
