Book – A Mystery in the Forest
Join the lovable protagonist and forager Deer in solving a curious mystery in this month’s pick, A Mystery in the Forest by the award-winning author, Susanna Isern! This beautiful and emotionally-insightful story highlights the act of forgiveness.
Oh my goodness….how beautiful are these illustrations? And, loving all the Wintery vibes. I’m a sucker for seasonal children’s books and can’t wait to put this one on display. I’m going to set Steven’s room up with a book nook, or book wall specifically for books like this.
Here’s little more about the book, it is beyond adorable…..
“Winner of the Silver Medal at the 2021 International Latino Book Awards – Deer wakes up every morning at the break of dawn, when the sun begins to rise and illuminates the entire field. Deer’s daily routine consists of harvesting seasonal fruits, and he loves to cook with the ingredients that he collects. One morning like any other, Deer starts his daily route, but someone seems to have already been there… Worried, Deer decides to go home, and what a surprise! The house is turned upside down and… someone has stolen his precious Secret Recipe Book! Do you dare to discover this great mystery? This sweet & charming tale invites readers to think about the importance of friendship, empathy and the ability to forgive.”
Art Kit #1 – Mini Faux Pie Sculptures
For our first art project we are making mini pies. We received the following….
- mini pie pan
- compostable knife
- pom poms
- clay
- mini rolling pin
This is just the cutest little craft ever! The clay is used to make the pastry (pie top) and the pom poms are the filling.
And….something I don’t usually touch on when it comes to the art projects is the fact that they actually tie in to the book.
“Deer is known for his delicious apple pies. Under his careful instruction, you will create a faux culinary masterpiece to display or to use in play! Artists across the centuries have found their muse in food, from still life paintings to sculptures. With the help of your picture book, let your imagination ignite as you create a feast for the eyes.”
Art Kit #2 – Stamped Tea Towel
For our second project we are making a tea towel. We received the following….
- 2 towels
- red paint
- green paint
- glue stick
- tree-shaped cookie cutter
- apple foam shape
- chipboard
- blue ribbon
Another adorable craft and this one would make such a cute gift! You first start by making the apple stamp, then you use the stamp and the tree shape to decorate the towel. You simply press the apple and tree into the paint and stamp on to the towel.
“Explore the art of printing on fabric as you create stamped tea towels. Kids will have so much fun making patterns with book-inspired images and colors that they may not realize they are building essential creative and critical thinking skills that are helpful both on and off the pages of a book. Add a handmade touch to your culinary adventures or next gifting experience. “
KidArtLit Review December 2021 – Final Thoughts
Such a cute and thoughtful curation this month! I am absolutely loving the December KidArtLit. The book is beautiful and the art projects are carefully thought out and well organized. I love how the projects tie in to the book and I love that one of the projects can be used as a gift this month. I truly love this subscription. It is at the top of my list!
