Once Upon a Book Club is a unique, interactive online community that offers a monthly subscription service where readers will receive a monthly box in the mail containing a newly released book to read for the month, along with 3-5 individually wrapped gifts. They kindly sent us this box for review.
I’m doing something a little different today and I am going to show you two boxes in the same review. I’m doing this for a couple reasons:
- We are having a look at the Once Upon a Book Club Halloween boxes and Halloween is already over, I received them a little late:)
- They offered 2 Halloween boxes, a full-sized Spooky box and a mini-sized Sweet box.
Here’s a closer look at both boxes….
Sweet Box
Our Sweet Box will feature 15 minutes of Flame by Christin Brecher and is a fun and cozy mystery, perfect for those who love the lighter side of the holiday. This box will feature a cozy mystery sized novel plus three gifts to bring it to life. It is $28.99 plus shipping.
15 Minutes of Flame: When Stella’s friend inherits a creaky, abandoned home in Nantucket, she knows it’s the perfect setting for the town’s annual Halloween fundraiser. A deserted, boarded-up building on the property–once used as a candle-making shop–adds to the creepy ambiance. But as Stella explores the shack’s dilapidated walls, she discovers a terrible secret: the skeleton of a Quaker woman, wrapped in blood-soaked clothing and hidden deep within a stone hearth . . .
While police investigate, Stella wastes no time asking for help from friends with long ties to Nantucket’s intricate history. The key to the murder may lie within a scorching 18th century love triangle that pit two best friends against one another over a dubious man. But before the case is solved, another life will be claimed–leaving Stella to wonder who in Nantucket is friend, and who is foe . . .
Gifts: For our gifts we received the following…
- pg. 204 – candle holder and book pins
- pg. 240 – reusable coffee cup
- pg. 283 – spiderweb table runner
Spooky Box
Our Spooky Box will feature The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates which is the perfect spooky read to put you in the mood for the eeriest time of year. This box will be just like our regular monthly box and include four gifts to bring this haunting tale to life! It is $34.99 plus shipping.
The Haunting of Ashburn House: There’s something wrong with Ashburn House…
The ancient building has been the subject of rumours for close to a century. Its owner, Edith, refused to let guests inside and rarely visited the nearby town.
Following Edith’s death, her sole surviving relative, Adrienne, inherits the property. Adrienne’s only possessions are a suitcase of luggage, twenty dollars, and her pet cat. Ashburn House is a lifeline she can’t afford to refuse.
Adrienne doesn’t believe in ghosts, but it’s hard to ignore the unease that grows as she explores her new home. Strange messages have been etched into the wallpaper, an old grave is hidden in the forest behind the house, and eerie portraits in the upstairs hall seem to watch her every movement.
As she uncovers more of the house’s secrets, Adrienne begins to believe the whispered rumours about Ashburn may hold more truth than she ever suspected. The building has a bleak and grisly past, and as she chases the threads of a decades-old mystery, Adrienne realises she’s become the prey to something deeply unnatural and intensely resentful.
Only one thing is certain: Ashburn’s dead are not at rest.
Gifts: For our gifts we received the following….
- pg. 14 – set of keys
- pg. 253 – art print
- pg. 273 – bookmark and flashlight
- pg. 329 – Dracul by Dacre Stoker & J.D. Barker
Once Upon a Book Club Review HALLOWEEN 2020 – Final Thoughts
Once Upon a Book Club is one of my favorite book subscription boxes and the fact that they released not one, but two, limited edition boxes for Halloween makes me LOVE it even more. I really appreciate that they offered 2 boxes – Spooky & Sweet. I think they did a great job with the book selection for both and the gifts were super fun. Some of the items I am tucking away in my Halloween decor box for next year. I can see why these boxes sold out so fast. I will definitely keep an eye out for them next year!
