Once Upon a Book Club Review June 2020

Once Upon a Book Club is a unique, interactive online community that offers a monthly subscription service where readers will receive a monthly box in the mail containing a newly released book to read for the month, along with 3-5 individually wrapped gifts. They kindly sent us this box for review.

Book subscription boxes are often my favorite to receive, and Once Upon a Book Club is one of my top picks. I strongly believe that reading is good for the soul. There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book on a rainy day with your favorite snacks and a big ol’ cup of coffee…..In a perfect world reading would be my job:)

Subscription Details

When you sign up for Once Upon a Book Club you have two options to choose from:

Both options start at $34.99 per month and you can choose a month-to-month subscription, 3-month subscription, 6-month subscription or an annual subscription.

Here’s a closer look at the June Adult Once Upon a Book Club…..

Note: Each box comes with a book and 3-5 individually wrapped gifts. To fully experience the box they remind us to only open the gifts once we reach the corresponding page numbers.

Note #2: The June gifts are my FAVORITE gifts to date. Once Upon a Book Club curated them perfectly.

How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior

Eighty-five-year-old Veronica McCreedy is estranged from her family and wants to find a worthwhile cause to leave her fortune to. When she sees a documentary about penguins being studied in Antarctica, she tells the scientists she’s coming to visit—and won’t take no for an answer. Shortly after arriving, she convinces the reluctant team to rescue an orphaned baby penguin. He becomes part of life at the base, and Veronica’s closed heart starts to open.

Her grandson, Patrick, comes to Antarctica to make one last attempt to get to know his grandmother. Together, Veronica, Patrick, and even the scientists learn what family, love, and connection are all about.

Here we have a note from the author which makes for a lovely addition to the box.

Two prints perfecting for framing.

Page 9

On page 9 the main character is talking about some items she has brought with her. As you guessed it two of those items just happen to be a pair of tongs and a refuse sack.

I may have squealed a bit when I opened this first gift. This is easily one of my favourite gifts to date, along with the coffee mug from the May box. I will use these tongs often, I love the teal color and I love the words etched in the side.

Page 108

On page 108 the main character is looking through her handbag for her glasses but finds a tin of tea instead and decides to make herself a cup.

This is another wonderful gift because it’s something you can actually use/drink, and tea pairs with books perfectly.

Page 269

On page 269 a man named Dietrich reads a chapter from Great Expectations to the main character. We didn’t receive the actual book but a journal instead. I love stationery so this is another one of my favorite gifts.

Page 321

On page 321 the main character is saying goodbye to one of the penguins and as she is doing it she touches the locket around her neck as it now includes a new addition…. a tuft of fluff from the penguin.

Once Upon a Book Club Review June 2020 – Final Thoughts

The June Once Upon a Book Club brought with it a wonderful book with an important message – it’s never too late to be the person you want to be. I love the storyline and I love that we received such an uplifting read. I am also pretty darn excited about the June gifts as they are my favorite to date. We received a selection of useful goodies this month which makes them that much more exciting….and valuable. For example, I will use the tongs and journal often so not only do the gifts make us feel like we are part of the book but they are items we can use long after the book is over. My love for Once Upon a Book Club has grown beyond what it was before.
