The Valencia Flavour Kit

Traditional Spanish paella, from Valencia, tends to be richer, smokier creation that the “Americanized” paellas most are familiar with.  The original dish dates back to the late 1700’s and consisted of saffron and paprika scented rice, with the local seafood catch of the day, plus chicken and beans.

This month’s kit includes recipes for traditional paella, with seafood & chicken, plus a vegetarian and vegan version.  We’ve also included a Pimenton Bloody Mary, perfect for creating patatas bravas or tomato soup.  Lastly, Rioja infused sea salt is the perfect Valentine’s Day finishing salt for sprinkling into red wine meringues, chocolate tarts, or homemade caramel sauce.  Enjoy!

Pimento Bloody Mary

Ingredients: Pimenton, cayenne, black peppercorns, celery salt, worcheshire powder, celery seed, spice

This spice is meant for the recipes, Gruyere Tomato Soup and Vegan Red Pepper Paella.  Both sound amazing and like good comfort food!  Nothing says comfort like tomato soup and grilled cheese.  With the never-ending winter up here in the great north, I could go for some comfort right about now.  Both these recipes have simple and easily found ingredients.  Many of them you should already have in your home.

Paella Spice

Ingredients: Smoked paprika, California chiles, black peppercorns, garlic, onion, roasted bell pepper, sun dried tomatoes, parsley, saffron, spices.

The theme of this box is making my mouth water!  With Paella being the main source of the theme it’s no surprise that your recipe is “Valencia Paella”.  With simple ingredients and very basic instructions this is a dish I would feel comfortable tackling in my own, limited kitchen.  I love that RawSpiceBar provides recipes that aren’t far fetched or over reaching.  They are simple, yet open you up to a new world of cooking!

Red Wine Sea Salt

Ingredients: Kosher sea salt, rioja

I have never heard of red wine sea salt before!  I was surprised that it’s recipe is a dessert.  I’m not sure I have the capabilities of producing meringues, but I would be interested in researching red wine sea salt further to see what else it could be used in!

RawSpiceBar February 2017 – Final Thoughts

I love the simplicity of this box; however the complexity of it is totally up to you!  RawSpiceBar simply provides the inspiration and the tools to spark your creativity.  Are you up for the challenge?  If you’re the kind of person who struggles with what to make for dinner, then this is a great solution for you!  You’re provided with meal ideas and the spices to get you going, but you’re not provided with an overwhelming amount of ingredients.  Not sure you’re ready to cook what’s recommended?  Just tuck the spice packets and recipes away until you are!
