Sweet Reads Box Review August 2021
Sweet Reads Box delivered big time this month with so many of my favourite things and a couple of new ones too. On a scale of “Don’t you know me?” to “OMG this is SO ME!” August’s box is off the charts! I mean, so me it’s almost spooky, ha ha. If you’re new to Sweet Reads Box, it’s a monthly Canadian subscription box that sends you a new novel, something delicious to eat and drink and a few other bookish items tied to the story like beautiful bookmarks, great-smelling soaps, cozy socks and the like. You can subscribe for three, six or 12 months or buy a single box to try or gift and additional themed limited editions like August’s fabulous Cook’s Box are released throughout the year. Let me show you this one! *
* They kindly sent us this one for review.
Every Sweet Reads Box opens to a product card with a quote related to the novel on one side and a description of the contents (below in italics) on the other. The card is always packed quote side up so you can set it aside and be surprised as you dive in. Do you read the card or save it ’til the end like me?
This month’s quote is from Abraham Maslow: “In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.”
I feel like I need to put that up somewhere where I can see it.
Ghosts by Dolly Alderton
August’s book is “Ghosts” by Dolly Alderton. “A timely read about online dating and life in your thirties. You will love the character of Nina Dean and her experiences in London, England. Follow her and her friends through the many life changes, including a Dad struggling with dementia. While often dealing with heavy topics, we found the story both humorous and touching. Set in one of our favourite cities and rich with characters and story Ghosts is a novel you will want to talk about.”
I hadn’t heard of “Ghosts” when I first opened the box but I feel like I’ve seen it everywhere since. Sounds like my kind of book! I’m reading it next.
Sweet Reads also included a Q&A with the author.
Salted Caramel Cashews (Handfuel)
“We loved the cashews in the Beach Reads Box so much that we had to include one of their other favours. Enjoy while reading or add to your next charcuterie board. **”
Love LOVE the salty sweet deliciousness of these crunchy cashews. And not skimpy on the amount either.
** indicates a Canadian product. Sweet Reads Box is big on supporting Canadian businesses.
Lemon Royal Tea (Zappyo)
“A bright lemony Yerba Mate tea. If you haven’t tried this type of tea before, it is fantastic hot or iced. **”
I’m drinking this tea with ice as I write and it’s scrumptious! It’s a “tasty and earthy blend with hints of lemon, ginger and mint.” Also vegan and no GMOs.
Sweet Reads Dad Cap (Peace Collective)
“A new custom SRB product! Fun, cool, and perfect for reading outside, we hope you love this cap and show off your book love with pride! **”
Oh. My. Gourd. How sweet is this hat? The embroidery is perfection and I love baseball caps!
Doodle Pad (Doodle Lovely)
“The perfect take-along companion for fun doodles to engage your mind instead of scrolling through your phone. Perfect for waiting at restaurants, for a date to show up, travel, or as a de-stressing mind break. **”
Each page of this marvellous little book includes a prompt to spark your imagination, whether that’s a squiggle, a pattern or a pair of bunny ears. The paper feels good too, like markers won’t bleed through the pages.
Custom Note Cards (I’ll Know It When I See It)
“Our friends at IKIWISI designed these beautiful notecards just for you. With bookish quotes and stunning illustrations, we know you will be eager to send these to friends and family. Nina often feels distanced from those at different life stages than her. We think she would have loved these note cards. **”
I love sending friends notes on just the right stationery and these cards are so lovely for reminding those special people in your life that you care. My favourite quote of the six: “What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?” — George Eliot.
London Bookmark (Woodly)
“We love this company that creates art from salvaged wood on Vancouver Island. We couldn’t resist including this beautiful bookmark they created for us showing the London skyline. **”
I’m a bookmark person and I love this one. Gorgeous!
Strawberry and Poppyseed Cleansing Bar (Dr. Botanicals)
“Whether you are getting freshened up for a night out or relaxing at home, this soap bar (from England) smells like summertime!”
I have a thing for soaps and this one feels sooo luxurious. Love the strawberry scent!
