Sweet Reads Box Review August 2022
Sweet Reads Box is a monthly Canadian book box that delivers a new novel, a snack and a drink to enjoy alongside and some bookish goodies tied to the story — think mugs, bookmarks and socks or what my fella likes to call “nerd things.” So basically all of my favourite things, ha ha. August’s edition helped subscribers squeeze the last out of summer with a lemon theme inspired by the book, The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie by Rachel Linden. 🍋 *
* They kindly sent us this box for review.
“Fall in love with pie-maker Lolly Blanchard as she seeks to rewrite the trajectory of her life on her 33rd birthday. With a little help from a quirky great-aunt and three lemon drops, she embarks on a magical trip to the land of what might have been. An empowering story about what might have been while pushing the protagonist forward to make her present life the one she truly wants.”
— Sweet Reads Box
Sweet Reads Box monthly novels are kept under wraps ’til they’ve shipped and I love that every month it comes as a surprise. Sometimes it’s a novel I’ve heard of, other times — like August — it’s one that’s all-new to me. I’ve been steering clear of reviews and spoilers so I don’t know how this one’s been received (it was released August 2) but I love the premise. Especially coming into this time of year, one that always feels like a time to start fresh.
I didn’t include a picture of it here but each Sweet Reads Box includes a product card with a guide to the contents. You’ll see the descriptions in italics. And the Canadian flag 🇨🇦 indicates a Canadian product.
Lemon Drops (Hammonds) “Perfectly tart and sweet, these lemon drops are perfect to enjoy while reading. Aunt Gert approved.”
Classic Lemon Iced Tea (Lemon Lily) “All natural, organic lemon iced tea. A summer favourite made from organic lemon peel and pieces, black tea and lemongrass. The perfect accompaniment to pie.” 🇨🇦
Lemon drops are the perfect tie-in to the story (they’re even lemon shaped!) and I’ve had this iced tea before and it’s delish. The only thing that could have made this Sweet Reads Box sweeter: another one of the yum-o lemon squares from April’s box. (Speaking of April’s box, Lessons in Chemistry is phenomenal! If you missed that box or want to gift it there are still a few available, and they’re on sale!)
Lemon Mug (Abbot) “Be inspired by Lolly Blanchard’s story. Pour your favourite hot beverage into this bright, cheerful mug and daydream about the second chances you’re hankering for.” 🇨🇦
I’m trying to winnow down my mug collection (I do love me a good mug!) but this one is too pretty not to keep.
All I Need Is A Bright Afternoon (Compendium) “A beautiful journal capturing the essence of the novel and the lemon theme. We hope it brings you inspiration.”
The cover says “All I need is a bright afternoon to dream things into being.” Isn’t that lovely?
Lemon Lip Balm “Bring a pop of lemon everywhere you go! We loved the shape and know it will never get lost in your purse/bag.”
This lip balm smells amazing and feels great. I wish the balm rolled up ’cause it’s hard to get at with long fingernails but mine are just press-on so I’ll be using it again soon enough.
And last but not least, a letter from the author, bookmark and recipe for Wanda Sunshine’s Buttery Toffee (not pictured). I would have loved a recipe for lemon pie but the toffee sounds delish.
August’s Sweet Reads Box might revolve around a certain citrus fruit but it’s no lemon. 😉 The book sounds delightful and all of the nerd things they included with it are just perfect. You can tell Sweet Reads puts a lot of thought and time into curating their boxes. I could hug this one! 🤗 (And it’s still available!)

You might want to revisit this review. I subscribed in September 2022 and it is now November 2022 and my box is not here yet. Neither is October’s. When contacted all I get is ‘it will be there soon’, ‘we are sending them out soon’. Cuteness of contents does not matter when one doesn’t even receive the box one paid for. Just a note for subscribers to beware. Check out their facebook page reviews: I am not the only one who has yet to receive what they paid for.
