Sweet Reads Box is a Canadian book box that sends you a new novel, something decadent to drink and eat and a few bookish items tied to the story or the theme of the box every month (ie. fun bookmarks, cute mugs, cozy socks, great-smelling candles and luxurious bath and body products) You can subscribe for 3, 6 or 12 months or buy single boxes to try or gift. Limited edition boxes are also released throughout the year. This fall marks the co’s fourth anniversary and I feel like they’re only getting better and better. Let’s look at June’s edition. *
* They kindly sent us this box for review.
When you open a Sweet Reads Box you’ll see a product card with an image and a quote related to the novel on one side and a description of the contents on the other. The card is always packed image side up for those who want to be surprised as they dive in. Do you read the card first, or are you Team Surprise Me? (I always set the card aside to read last.)
This month’s quote is from the American activist, author and poet, Bryant H. McGill: “There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love.”
Note: Two stars ** after the product description indicates a Canadian product.
The Good Father: A Novel by Wayne Grady
June’s book is The Good Father: A Novel by Wayne Grady. “The first contemporary novel by Canadian author Wayne Grady. A story of a father, his daughter, and their relationship through the years. Told from both the daughter (Daphne) and father’s (Harry) point of view, we see two sides of the same relationship. This novel is a unique look into a strained parent-child relationship that helps us understand compounding emotions of regret, loss and addiction. In the end, redemption, family and love take centre stage, but the journey is not easy. This novel is set in both Toronto and Vancouver, showing us varying perspectives on family, geography, and experience. **”
I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump and haven’t started this one yet but stories about family relationships are my jam, as are novels told from multiple points of view. I hadn’t heard of it before opening June’s Sweet Reads and it sounds wonderful. The Good Father was released in April this year.
Sweet Reads also included a letter from the author. ** I set it aside to read after I finish the book so I don’t see any spoilers.
Canada Insulated Water Bottle (Danica)
“With two of Canada’s iconic cities as the setting for this novel, we wanted to include some Canadiana. This remarkable water bottle will be your go-to summer refreshment vessel.**”
I feel like you can never have too many water bottles, especially in the summer when it’s so important to stay hydrated. This insulated, stainless steel, BPA-free cutie keeps drinks nice and cool. And it’s a good size too.
Me Time Tea (Woash Wellness)
“The perfect tea for Sweet Reads! Me Time tea is focused on giving you a chance to calm the mind and release stress. Fitting for our characters’ stories and matching our mission too. **”
Sweet Reads’ slogan is “Me Time. Delivered” so this loose leaf Me Time Tea is a perfect fit. “A blend of adaptogenic tulsi and aromatic florals designed to calm the mind, release stress and transcend you into a state of rest and digest.”
Double Caramel Popcorn (Comeback Snacks)
“We love the story of Comeback Snacks and their focus on second chances. Perfectly fitting for Daphne and Harry’s stories. And perfectly delicious too! **”
Popcorn is one of my favourite snacks and this double caramel blend is incredible! Crunchy, sweet and not so sticky that you’ll muck up your pages while you’re reading. Comeback Snacks was dreamed up in prison by a first-time offender who wanted to help ex-cons re-enter society with employment that would help them gain confidence, prevent further crimes and keep communities safe.
Wine Tasting Notes (Chronicle Books)
“Harry’s work centres around his love of wine and wine tastings but just never seems to get them set up. These tasting notes will help you turn any night into a wine tasting experience.”
We have friends who love to entertain and enjoy wine more often than we do so we’ve passed this one along to them. But if it was a notepad for chocolate tasting I’d keep it for sure!
Rose Journal (Do Good Paper Co)
“These remarkable journals were special ordered for our subscribers. They are the ultimate in journaling. This journal ties into the novel, as Daphne takes to journaling about part of her therapy. We also love the motto of this amazing Canadian brand that focuses on mindful environmental choices and giving back. **”
A new notebook always feels like a new chance to start fresh and get organized so I was excited to see this one. And I love how Sweet Reads includes products from companies that give back (Comeback Snacks too!).
Pastel Retro Pen (Ooly)
“Both Daphne and Harry have writing as part of their careers/schooling. Grab this comfy and retro-cool pen for your journal and more.”
My teen lit up when she saw this pen so I said she could have it. (Shared the pen, kept the popcorn, ha ha.)
June’s Sweet Reads Box is sold out and July’s too but August is available and it’ll go quick! Made by readers for readers with just about everything you could want for your me time, and a few surprises too. Plus heavy on the CanCon *and* supports small businesses that give back. I know of several subscribers who’ve been introduced to products by Sweet Reads Box and loved them so much that they ordered more. (Me too! 🙋♀️)
