Dark August by Katie Tallo
Augusta (Gus) Monet is living an aimless existence with her grifter boyfriend when she learns that her great grandmother—her last living relative—has just died. Ditching her boyfriend, Gus returns to the home she left as a young girl. Her inheritance turns out to be a dilapidated house and an old dog named Levi. While combing through her great grandmother’s possessions, Gus stumbles across an old trunk filled with long-lost childhood belongings. But that’s not all the trunk contains. She also discovers cold case files that belonged to her mother, a disgraced police detective who died in a car accident when Gus was eight. Gus remembers her mother obsessing over these very same documents and photographs, especially a Polaroid of a young ballerina.
When Gus spots a front-page news story about the unearthing of a body linked to one of the cold case files from her grandmother’s trunk, she can’t resist following her mother’s clues. As she digs deeper, determined to finish her mother’s investigation, her search leads her to a deserted ghost town, which was left abandoned when the residents fled after a horrific fire. As Gus’ obsession with the case grows, she inadvertently stirs up the evils of the past, putting her life in danger. But Gus refuses to be undeterred and is committed to uncovering long-buried secrets, including the secrets surrounding a missing geology student, the young ballerina in the Polaroid, a prominent family’s devastating legacy, and a toxic blast that blew an entire town off the map.
But is Gus ready to learn the truths that culminated on one terrible August night, more than a decade earlier, when lives were taken, and secrets were presumed buried forever…?
Pineapple Coconut Mojito Mix
A delicious drink mix packed with the flavors of Summer. Delicious made with or without rum.
Ummmm….hello! This is exactly what Mama needs and it’s the perfect beverage for a Summer box. We are coming to the end of the season and I feel the need to embrace the last few days and do some Summery things. Maybe a backyard BBQ complete with Pineapple Mojitos?
Salt & Pepper and Sweet Potato Chips
The perfect salty snacks – a bit of sweet and spicy to crunch on through the really suspenseful parts.
Ok, I feel like they curated this snack specifically for me. Ever since I was pregnant I have had an on-going craving for chips. I will try to save these for my cheat day but they might not last that long.
PS – Have you ever tried putting your chips in the freezer? SO good!
Hello Sunshine Spatula
A Summery addition to your kitchen that will remind you of the summer rays long after Summer days are over.
This is just the cutest spatula I have ever seen. I love the bright yellow color and I love that it is going to add some Summer vibes to my kitchen. I will use this often.
Glass Reusable Straws
Our favorite reusable straws that ensure you are staying green while sipping your favorite beverage.
If I had to choose a reusable straw from the following – metal, glass, bamboo – I would choose glass every time. I have one that I use often so I am very happy to have a few more to add to my straw collection.
Lay-Flat Notebook
Journal or take notes without worrying about breaking the spine with this eclipse patterned notebook. Great for take notes on your own cold-case assignment.
I LOVE it when Sweet Reads includes notebooks in their boxes. Notebooks are up there with candles and coffee mugs – I would be happy to receive one in every box.
Waterproof Glow-in-the-Dark Playing Cards
Take your next camping trip, outdoor adventure or game night to a whole other level with these special glow-in-the-dark cards that are waterproof. Change them up, turn out the lights and play.
How fun are these?! I won’t personally use them but my Brother’s family camps often and my nieces will absolutely love these for their next trip.
Ex Libria Bookplates
A book lender’s favorite item. These literary inspired bookish sticker bookplates are just the item you need for your home library.
I have been lending my books out a ton lately. I’m guessing we all have more time to read thanks to the COVID situation. And while I often tell my friends to keep the book or pass it on after they read it there are a few books that I want back. These bookplates will come in very handy for my favorite books….the ones I don’t want to loose track of.
Clothespin Photo Holder
A polaroid photo is a key item in Dark August. We included this fun and colourful holder wire for you to display your favorite Summer memories.
Such a cute way to make Summer last. Print off all your favourite Summer photos and hang this clothespin holder somewhere the entire family can see it daily. This Summer might not have looked like we were expecting it to but it is still worth remembering.
Limited Edition Summer Suspense Box – Final Thoughts
I am a sucker for themed boxes, especially when they are themed according to the season. There’s just something so fun about seasonal items. I can’t get enough of them. And as far as limited edition boxes go, Sweet Reads Box does an amazing job. In fact, I’m tempted to say their LE boxes are my favorite. The book was the perfect choice (the name says it all) as were all of the other items in the box. My favorite items are the mojito mix, spatula, straws and the book of course. I just started reading it so I can’t give you any feedback on it just yet but keep an eye on my Insta Stories….I will post updates there.
