Do you set reading goals for the year? I rarely do but this year I have two: first, to read a little in the mornings so I can start the day with some “me time”, rather than saving it ’til after the kids have gone to bed when I can barely keep my eyes open. (Especially since bedtime has gotten much later since the holidays.) Second, I want to read most if not all of Sweet Reads‘ monthly pick in time for my post so I can share some thoughts and hopefully hear some of yours. (Sadly that’s not the case this time around. Prepping for Christmas left me with little time and energy to read more than a few magazines.)
If you’re new to Sweet Reads Box, it’s a monthly Canadian book box that delivers a new novel, treats to drink and to eat and some bookish items related to the story or the theme of the box (think unique bookmarks, fun page flags, charming mugs and wonderful bath and body products). Sweet Reads Box is available by subscription and single box and ships across Canada. They also release limited editions throughout the year that are wildly popular — I wouldn’t be surprised if the Valentine’s and Galentine’s boxes announced just yesterday sell out before the weekend’s through.
“What draws people to be friends is that they see the truth. They share it.”— C.S. Lewis
Each Sweet Reads Box opens with a product card with a quote related to that month’s book on one side and a guide to the contents on the other. I don’t always save the card but I really like the C.S. Lewis quote for November so I think I might frame it.
The Family by Naomi Krupitsky
One of my favourite things about Sweet Reads Box is the book is always a surprise (unless of course you happen to stumble upon a spoiler somewhere). I’m a huge fan of The Sopranos so November’s pick is right up my alley. It’s The Family by Naomi Krupitsky.
“A debut historical fiction novel about two daughters of the Italian mafia in Brooklyn, NY. Uniquely told through these women’s experiences as their friendships grow intertwined into adulthood. Their stories are not flamboyant but focused on relationship, family ties and the power that holds The Family together. A unique read with remarkably vivid imagery, tension, power struggles, secrets and a fictional glimpse of life inside a crime family.”
Have you read it? What did you think?
Almond Biscotti Tea (Tealish) · “Continuing with the Italian theme this amazing tea is the perfect cup of warmth on a cold November day.” 🇨🇦
Pistachio Date Bite & Sea Salt and Almond (Bisou) · “Once we tried these amazing date bites we knew they needed to be featured in a box. The perfect sweet snack without the guilt of sugar treats.” 🇨🇦
Chocolate & Vanilla Italian Wafers (Cubetti) · “Made in Italy wafers that will bring the taste of Italy home. A delicious on the go treat.”
Sweet Reads’ monthly boxes generally alternate between coffee one month and tea the next. I’m not a coffee fan (tho I can always find someone to share it with) but tea I love and this one is such a nice pick. Smooth. And making a cup of loose-leaf tea always feels like a self-care moment. And the snacks were delicious! Normally there’s one treat and for November we got four! FOUR! 😋
Travel Cup (Ecoffee) · “Whether you are taking a tea or espresso to go these eco-friendly cups are great for work, commuting, reading by the fire or errands for The Family.”
We have more cups and mugs than we need for sure but l’m keeping this one anyway. Even if I’m only travelling from the kitchen to the living room. 😂😬 A pretty new cup is a nice little pick me up, don’t you think?
Cozy Night In Sea Salt Bath Soak (Walton Wood Farm) · “Regardless of whether you are experiencing the trials and tribulations of The Family, these bath salts are the perfect way to decompress, relax and take some much deserved Me Time.” 🇨🇦
I’m really into baths lately and this soak has been so nice. Smells like fresh cut herbs and no one bothering me. 😂 I hope Sweet Reads Box makes this available in their shop. (They’ve got all kinds of items from past boxes and some really lovely branded merch.)
Trivet (Danica) · “Sunday dinners are a cornerstone of the week — centered around food, family and love. This retro trivet brings together the warmth of family meals and beauty in practicality.” 🇨🇦
Trivets are one of those things I love but wouldn’t buy myself (even tho they’re practical for some reason they feel indulgent too) so I was so delighted to see this one! My favourite item in November’s box next to the book.
And last, this pretty and practical Enjoy the Little Things Swedish Dish Cloth (Danica) · “We love eco-friendly Swedish dishcloths and through this design paired perfectly with tea.” 🇨🇦
It wouldn’t be unreasonable to have a miss or two but November’s Sweet Reads Box hit the mark for me all the way ’round. An excellent curation of high quality little luxuries to go with what sounds like a compelling story.
