UpperCase Review October 2016

UpperCase Review October 2016

This month’s UpperCase Box came at the perfect time. I literally just finished the September book – The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron. I loved the September book. It kept me intrigued the entire time, and that is a quality I NEED in the books I read. If it is too wordy, too descriptive, or too slow, I simply won’t read it. So far I have loved both of the books I have received from UpperCase. I can’t wait to see what they sent us for October.

Clip onto the top or side of your book page. Stays in place with two magnets and ribbon inside of the bookmark. You can write your own message on the bookmark. Makes a perfect gift for anyone into the 80’s, music, retro items or just cute things in general.

Oh my, these are awesome. I may have opened the box when I was at the post office and the ladies there got such a kick out of these 80’s inspired bookmarks.

Punk Rock Writers Journal

This punk rock writers journal reimagines Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde, and other influential authors as modern misfits. With attitude to spare, it’s sure to inspire a little creative rebellion.

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they’ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now―but not Vassa’s working-class neighborhood.

In Vassa’s neighborhood, where she lives with her stepmother and bickering stepsisters, one might stumble onto magic, but stumbling out again could become an issue. Babs Yagg, the owner of the local convenience store, has a policy of beheading shoplifters―and sometimes innocent shoppers as well. So when Vassa’s stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission.

But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough-talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg’s help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch’s curse and free her Brooklyn neighborhood. But Babs won’t be playing fair….

UpperCase Review October 2016 – Final Thoughts

Uppercase is probably my favourite book subscription right now. I mentioned it above, but I LOVED the first two books I received. I’m pretty high maintenance when it comes to books, I’ve been known to stop reading books if I can’t get into them after reading the first few pages. My September book had me interested right away. I pretty much knew I was going to like it after reading the excerpt. However, I’m not too sure how I feel about this month’s selection. Don’t get me wrong, I am certainly going to read it, but it is a little out of my comfort zone. Magic and curses and talking dolls all sound a little odd to me. But I’m intrigued at the same time. One thing is for sure, it’s the perfect book for the month of October.

XOXO
