Goodfood Review: Breakfast Pastries

Goodfood is a weekly subscription that delivers all of the fresh ingredients you need in pre-measured amounts to make delicious meals at home. (Sarah’s reviewed some of their dinner options here if you’re interested in learning more about those.) They’ve come out with some scrumptious-looking additions to their breakfast line-up since we sampled their smoothies and today I’ve got some thoughts on their breakfast pastries. Short story: they’re oven-ready pillows of delicious goodness that don’t come cheap but you get what you pay for — delectable and generous fillings enveloped in maybe the lightest and flakiest pastry I’ve ever tasted, ready in 20 to 30 minutes and gone in much less. The long story? Right this way. (And actually it’s not that long. A story in pictures more than anything else.) *

The pastries are delivered frozen in an insulated box and packaged with four portions per bag. A typical breakfast order contains 12 portions and can be a mix of pastries, smoothies, oat bowls, granola and other items, all $4.99 per portion/$59.88 for 12. You can see my apple turnovers are starting to thaw here, probably owing to a blow-up with the kids between the time I opened the box and the time I got the chance to take some pictures. Not that it mattered. Normally you keep them in the freezer and thaw them overnight so they’re oven-ready in the a.m. but since these had a head start (and since my kids were being so lovely) I just put these in the fridge for four or five hours and baked them off in the afternoon.

Apple turnovers in the middle of the day. With ice cream even. Have I lost my damned mind? But oh were they delicious! Flakey hand pies with super tasty apple filling with just the slightest hint of cinnamon. (Very slight.)

Each of the pastries we tried clocked in around 300 calories. The apple turnovers are 320 calories each with 15 grams of fat, 40 grams carbohydrates, 15 grams sugar and 4 grams protein.

Cheesecake is one of my favourite desserts so I was really excited to try Goodfood’s strawberry and cheese danish pastries. The pastry was amazing but the filling just a little bit too sweet. So still and A, but not an A+.

These ones I baked early one morning after tossing and turning all night. Chocolatines fresh out of the oven when the kids came downstairs for breakfast made me feel like a supermom but might have been the only thing I accomplished all day. #truth

And for something a little different, spanakopita (spinach and feta pastries). I wouldn’t think to make these for breakfast — brunch for sure, lunch most def, even dinner with a big salad — but maybe you would? Whatever the case, they’re very, very good. I’d order them again. Or maybe first I’d try Goodfood’s croissants or Tuscan-style tomato and olive turnovers.

The final word on Goodfood’s breakfast pastries: Bakery quality delicacies conveniently delivered frozen to your door; a delicious addition to Goodfood’s breakfast lineup that’s worth the price. Maybe not an everyday eat, but a treat I’d look forward to once or twice a week.
