Hygge in a Box Review: The Summer Hygge Box 2022

“A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.”

— James Dent

One of my favourite subscriptions for a few years now is Hygge in a Box, a quarterly lifestyle and wellness box curated with a thoughtful collection of Canadian-made products and ideas to enjoy hygge moments with the seasons. It’s available in small and large sizes as a quarterly subscription or by-the-box and ships from Manitoba across Canada and the US. Here’s a look at the latest edition, the Summer Hygge Box (large version).*

*They kindly sent us this box for review

Each quarterly box includes an introductory card with a note from Hygge in a Box founders and sisters Jill Kantor and Lisa Kroft. One side offers a variety of suggestions to enjoy hygge moments unique to the season, while the other delivers a guide to the contents on the other. (You’ll see the product descriptions in italics below.)

“Included in the box are items to pamper yourself which have been carefully curated to ensure you are only receiving high quality products, that have not been mass manufactured … We also ensure that our products are as natural as possible, made with sustainability in mind, organic when available, from ethical and Fair-trade sources and ones made with love by the makers.”

Summer Read · Book Lovers by Emily Henry · “Reading is the perfect hygge refuge, especially in the lazy days of summer. Back by popular demand! We love all of Emily Henry’s books and this was no exception. Book Lovers was named a Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Oprah Daily and it does not disappoint.”

Book Lovers is one of my most-anticipated reads of 2022 so I was absolutely thrilled to see it in the Summer Hygge Box. Plus her last book was so, so good (Hygge in a Box included it in last summer’s box).

Handmade Blown Glass Bud Vase · Brook Drabot (Warren, MB) · “Brook has been working with glass in one form or another for over twenty years. She uses three different sizes of oxygen and propane fueled torches to melt and blow the glass and uses a kiln to slowly cool the glass. Each piece has a one-of-a-kind result due to being made with love by hand! This is a beautiful addition to your home decor and gorgeous with fresh wild flowers and garden flowers.”

This vase is always going to be special to me because it’s the first one to hold flowers from my own garden. 🥰 I love the blue for summer especially but I’m sure I’ll use it year-round. It’s beautiful!

Summer Love Cooling Mist · Prairie Potions (Winnipeg, MB) · “Prairie Potions handmakes an array of All Natural products with a focus on simplicity. Use this refreshing spray for bug bites, sunburn and hot, steamy skin all summer long. Aloe vera, witch hazel and rosewater soothe skin while peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils cool and refresh. Keep in the fridge for an extra blast of cool. This will be your go-to for long days at the beach, time on the dock, summer hikes and during those heat waves!”

Beach Babe Hand Rescue *exclusive item for subscribers* · Walton Wood Farm (Bailieboro, ON) · “A love story, and adventure, and a scrappy start-up tale. The makers met on a float plane, fell in love, bought a farm and began making products in their country kitchen. Enjoy the delicious fresh pineapple scent of the Beach Babe hand cream that makes you feel like you’re at the beach already. It comes in a handy tube, and is make with a moisturizing blend of cocoa butter, shea butter and green tea (vegan, cruelty free, gluten free).”

Juniper and Berry Loofah Soap *bonus item — online survey gift* · Lend Me Some Sugar (Winnipeg, MB) · “The makers are passionate about creating luxurious, simple ingredient, cruelty-free bath and body products. They want to help you relax without worrying about harsh chemicals or breaking your budget. All products are proudly handmade and “tested on people, not pets.” Enjoy this soap with a loofah built right into it. Loofahs are actually a type of zuchinni-like plant that grows in your garden. They are wonderful to help slough away dry skin leaving your smooth and soft.”

I’m obsessed with mists and this one from Prairie Potions is in heavy rotation over here. The peppermint and lavender is so refreshing! The pineapple-scented hand cream is keeping my paws so soft and good-smelling. And the loofah soap is brilliant! My heels have been so dry from wearing flip flops all the time and the soap does a marvellous job sloughing off the crusty bits. But it’s not so scratchy that you can’t use it on your arms and legs too.

Gourmet Raspberry Handmade Shortbread · The Shortbread Co. (Cobourg, ON) · “A mother-daughter team pouring two generations of care and craftmanship into every handmade cookie they bake. Their resident sweet-tart, BC-grown, freeze-dried berries are gently grounded and folded into their original shortbread and topped with a perfectly sweet, fresh-squeezed raspberry icing. Bet you can’t have just one!”

Handmade Olive Wood Salad Servers · OliveWood Glory · (Calgary, AB) · “OliveWood Glory is a family owned business who began their company after realizing a void in the marketplace for quality wood kitchenware. 100% handmade from a single block of olive trees 300 to 500 years old growing on the Mediterranean. 100% natural, chemical free, seamless, nonporous, food safe and sustainable. These gorgeous salad servers are made from a single block of olive wood. Natural elements like wood are a simple way to bring hygge into the kitchen.”

Shortbread is more of a winter cookie to me but the raspberry icing topping this one makes it a surprisingly summery treat. And they’re so light, too! The salad servers are stunning and the natural wood is a nice warm contrast to the tile and stone in our kitchen.

Maté Boost & Peach, Please Tea (Iced Tea) · Tease (Ottawa, ON) · “Tease believes wellness rituals shouldn’t be complicated. Celebrate summer with two of their bestselling warm weather teas to make the perfect glass of iced tea. Peach, Please: a juicy blend with hydrating peach and hibiscus flower to forget and worries and get into relax mode (caffeine free). Maté is a popular ingredient known to increase metabolism and reduce cravings in between meals. Green yerba maté, lemon peel and lemongrass (caffeinated).”

I’m drinking a tall glass of the Peach, Please iced tea as I’m writing this post and it’s lovely! Very refreshing and the hibiscus complements the peach so well. This bag of the loose leaf blend makes 20 servings! 😋 I haven’t tried the Maté Boost (green tea isn’t my fave.)

The Summer Hygge Box also included an absolutely scrumptious and easy blueberry crisp recipe, a one-year subscription to Selfpause, an app that uses affirmations to encourage positive thinking, plus discounts to a number of brands featured in the box.

I love the Summer Hygge Box from Hygge in a Box for all kinds of reasons, most importantly because it reminds me that the greatest joys can be found in the smallest moments — drinking a tall glass of iced tea on a hot, sticky day; bringing the outdoors in with flowers from your own garden; getting lost in a great book under a shady tree. This is making the most of the season to me.

The Summer Hygge Box is sold out, but the Fall edition is currently available to order as a quarterly subscription or a one-time purchase and ships in October. You’ll also find a number of hygge books, accessories and even hygge sweatshirts in their shop.
