Oatbox Review April 2019

I think breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, so I’m always excited to see what’s in my Oatbox. It’s a monthly breakfast subscription box from Montreal that comes with two large bags of handcrafted granolas that are 100% natural and preservative-free, plus two recipes. Gluten-free boxes are available and subscriptions can be delayed or cancelled free of charge. (They kindly sent us this box for review.)

There are three Oatbox subscription options to choose from (all prices in CAD):

  • The Starter Kit (that’s my box) — 2 granola mixes each month for $20
  • The On The Go Kit — 1 granola mix + 6 oatmeal portions + 3 breakfast bars each month for $30
  • The Wolfpack Kit (great for families!) — 2 granola mixes + 6 oatmeal portions + 6 breakfast bars each month for $47

Shipping in North America is free.

Two different Oatbox flavours are included each month. April’s are Strawberry & Turmeric and Apple Crunch. Each 380-gram bag contains about 11 one-third cup servings (160 calories for both flavours).

The recommended serving size used to be half a cup — a small portion, but also pretty standard. I don’t know in what world someone would eat a third of a cup for breakfast. Sprinkled on yogurt with a piece of fruit or a glass of juice, sure, but on its own? That would require some remarkable restraint. Which we don’t have.

The recipes use or complement the month’s granolas. For April there’s Grilled Pears with a Coconut Caramel Sauce (Hello, Lover! ) that serves 2 to 4 and Apple Crumble for 8. Must try both!

I had my doubts about the Strawberry & Turmeric (I’m not a huge turmeric fan) but it’s surprisingly good. The granola itself is neutral (for lack of a better word) — by that I mean it tastes like plain granola with a hint of maple and the little flakes of freeze-dried strawberries add big pops of flavour. YUM!

And you can’t go wrong with the Apple Crunch. Dried apple, maple syrup and a hint of cinnamon — a classic combination made even more delicious with the addition of pumpkin seeds for crunch. Delicious!

Oatbox is one of my favourite subscriptions. The granolas are consistently delicious and fresh, and I like being surprised with two new flavours each month. I can think of so many people who would appreciate the box: busy families trying to eat healthy, students away at university or college, new moms and dads, seniors, those healing at home after a hospital stay, athletes, new homeowners (makes a great housewarming gift!), newlyweds (a six-month subscription would be a great wedding gift)… I could go on and on.

What do you think of Oatbox? Would you try it? Who in your life would enjoy a subscription?
