Oatbox Review February 2019

Oatbox is a monthly breakfast subscription box from Montreal. It includes two large bags of handcrafted granolas that are 100% natural and preservative-free, plus two recipes that use them or make a tasty pairing. Gluten-free boxes are available and subscriptions can be delayed or cancelled free of charge.

There are three Oatbox subscription options to choose from (all prices in CAD):

  • The Starter Kit (that’s my box) — 2 granola mixes each month for $20
  • The On The Go Kit — 1 granola mix + 6 oatmeal portions + 3 breakfast bars each month for $30
  • The Wolfpack Kit (great for families!) — 2 granola mixes + 6 oatmeal portions + 6 breakfast bars each month for $47

Shipping in North America is free.

My box also included a coupon code for $10 off my first subscription order to Evive, a Montreal company that offers blender-free protein smoothie cubes made of fruits and veggies, superfoods and vegan protein.

Two different Oatbox flavours are included each month. February’s are Salted Caramel and Triple Dark Chocolate. Each 380-gram bag contains about 8 half-cup servings (250 calories per serving for the Salted Caramel and 240 for the Triple Dark Chocolate).

The Oatbox recipe cards are just gorgeous — whoever does the styling and the photography should do a cookbook or sell prints. (I’d buy both!) On the left we have Grilled Pears with a Coconut Caramel Sauce sprinkled with Triple Chocolate Granola, and on the right, Easy and Decadent Chocolate Waffles. Both recipes take 20 minutes to prepare, cook for 25 minutes, and call for just a handful of ingredients, so we’re not talking about anything crazy complicated or time-consuming.

October’s Oatbox had a Pear and Salted Caramel that I didn’t find particularly flavourful, but this Salted Caramel is the bomb.  It’s caramel-y but not too sweet, and the thin slivers of almond throughout make it extra crunchy and delish. I’m a huge chocolate lover and I actually prefer this one over the Triple Dark Chocolate (tho it’s also very good too).

Very generous with the dark chocolate chunks, as you can see.

These are not the shiny, sugar-coated granolas you’ll find at the grocery store. They’re much less sweet and you don’t need a lot to feel satisfied. This one would be fun to include in a chocolate lover’s brunch with the chocolate waffles, chocolate croissants and (bien sûr!) hot choco.

And now for a trick. (See how I can make the Triple Dark Chocolate disappear!)

Num num! 😋

Oatbox Review February 2019 – Final Thoughts

I’m a big fan of Oatbox. The granolas are tasty, fresh, made from good-for-you ingredients and it’s fun to be surprised with two new flavours each month. I’ve gifted boxes to friends for Christmas but I can think of so many other occasions where it would be appreciated. How ’bout a subscription for a new mom or a student away at university? Or for those starting a new health and fitness regimen or training for a race in the Spring? I’d be delighted to receive a box as a hostess or housewarming gift and think a subscription would make a great wedding gift too.
