Once Upon a Book Club Review May 2020

Once Upon a Book Club is a unique, interactive online community that offers a monthly subscription service where readers will receive a monthly box in the mail containing a newly released book to read for the month, along with 3-5 individually wrapped gifts. They kindly sent us this box for review.

Now that baby Steven is here I have realized just how lovely it is to be able to sit down with a big cup of tea and get lost in a book. I kind of figured this would happen so I made a point of reading as much as possible prior to his arrival. And now that he is here and reading time is at a minimum I am craving the early mornings spent curled up in my favorite chair with a book in my hand.

I am slowly carving out some reading time in my schedule and it is subscription boxes like Once Upon a Book Club that are making me want to get it sorted out sooner than later.

Where the Lost Wander by Amy Harmon

The Overland Trail, 1853: Naomi May never expected to be widowed at twenty. Eager to leave her grief behind, she sets off with her family for a life out West. On the trail, she forms an instant connection with John Lowry, a half-Pawnee man straddling two worlds and a stranger in both.

But life in a wagon train is fraught with hardship, fear, and death. Even as John and Naomi are drawn to each other, the trials of the journey and their disparate pasts work to keep them apart. John’s heritage gains them safe passage through hostile territory only to come between them as they seek to build a life together.

When a horrific tragedy strikes, decimating Naomi’s family and separating her from John, the promises they made are all they have left. Ripped apart, they can’t turn back, they can’t go on, and they can’t let go. Both will have to make terrible sacrifices to find each other, save each other, and eventually… make peace with who they are.

Typically I prefer a good thriller (you all probably know that by now) but there’s just something about this book that is making me want to put my thrillers on the back burner. Maybe it’s my motherly soft side coming out but I find myself craving something a little more than suspense and murder.

On page 25 one of the characters is getting a hair cut and there is mention of shears, so here we have a gorgeous set of gold shears with beautiful detail.

Page 76

On page 76 one of the characters is enjoying a cup of coffee. And how perfect is the scene on this tin cup? It fits the setting of the book perfectly. I am tempted to say this is one of my favorite bookish goodies to date!

Page 130

On page 130 there’s mention of a picture which is rolled into a scroll and wrapped with cloth. It’s items like this that really make you feel like you are part of the book.

Page 328

On page 328 one of the characters is wrapped in a small wool blanket. The blanket in the book has a stripe of every color so this one matches it perfectly.

Once Upon a Book Club Review May 2020 – Final Thoughts

The May Once Upon a Book Club has opened my mind to a new genre. Classified as historical romance, Where the Lost Wander is a book I never would have picked out on my own. Described as an epic and haunting love story set on the Oregon Trail it receives amazing reviews on Goodreads – 4.5 out of 5 stars to be exact. This would make it one of the highest rated books I have read in a long time. I was able to read the first couple chapters on the weekend and oh my goodness….if it weren’t for Baby Steven and all the work I have to catch up on I’m pretty sure I would have finished the book in a matter of days. I am counting the moments until I can sneak away and read a few more chapters. This is a book you MUST consider putting on your TBR list!
