Sweet Reads Box Review September 2021

Sweet Reads Box is a monthly Canadian book box that sends you a new novel, something tasty to eat and drink and some brilliant bookish things to enhance your reading experience — think cozy socks to keep you warm, great-smelling candles set the mood and notebooks to note your favourite quotes and passages. They call it “me time delivered” and really it’s bang on. Here’s a look at September’s box. *

* They kindly sent us this box for review.

Each Sweet Reads Box opens with a product card that has a quote related to the novel on one side and a little bit about the contents on the other (I’ve quoted from it in italics below).

September’s quote is from the late American literary, television, film, and cultural critic, John Leonard: “It takes a long time to grow an old friend.”

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

“A novel about life, friendships, and relationships. Sally Rooney takes us inside the friendship of Eileen and Alice as they describe their daily life in emails. We see their hopes, dreams, and worries, and we wonder if their search for meaning and happiness is similar to our own. Even though their lives are different than ours, we cannot help but ask ourselves the same questions. Alice and Eileen are realistic, complex, and like all of us, seek a human connection in their friends and lovers. We feel this novel will be one you want to talk about, and we look forward to your thoughts!”

I read an excerpt of this one online a few months ago and immediately put it on my wish list so I was absolutely thrilled to see it in September’s box. I’ve got a couple other books I need to finish before I can read it but I’m excited to pick up where I left off!

Sweet Reads Box also included a note from the publisher. (I set it aside to read after the book so I can’t tell you what it says.)

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate (Walton Wood Farms)

“The perfect fall drink. Make up a warm cozy mug of this hot chocolate as you dream of exploring Dublin and the Irish countryside with Eileen and Alice. **”

I had to tuck this out of sight to keep from drinking it before I read the novel — salted caramel hot choco sounds amazing! Love a combo of salty and sweet. Oh and I should mention the two asterisks indicates a Canadian product.

Poppy Mix (Poppy Popcorn)

“After the rave reviews of the Asheville Mix, we chose this delicious sweet and spicy popcorn combo as the perfect snack for reading a sweet and spicy novel. Happy snacking!”

And I opened this popcorn fully intending to just have a nibble but somehow it was gone a day later. (Funny how that happens.) It’s a mix of white cheddar, salted caramel and jalapeño cheddar for a little kick. I thought it would be too spicy for me but apparently not. Really delicious.

Leafy Leaves Jumbo Journal (Ecojot)

“Combine the beauty of fall leaves and a practical lined journal, and you have your new Fall favourite. Designer Carolyn Gavin painted the cover design on a walk in the countryside, showcasing fall’s many colours. Use it as a personal journal and capture the beautiful world you see around you. **”

Ecojot makes such great journals. The colour illustration is beautiful and perfect for this time of year and the coil binding means you don’t have to hold the pages for them to lie flat. Love this one!

Book Shop Custom Candle (Allen Wick)

“A beautiful candle capturing the aroma of your favourite bookshop. Light your candle to set the mood for a relaxing reading experience. **”

This candle has a sweet smell that reminds me more of a bakery than a bookshop — maybe it’s vanilla I’m getting? I prefer fresh citrus or woodsy scents so it’s not my favourite but I love the name and how it’s made from clean-burning soy wax. Makes an excellent accessory for bookish photos but maybe I’ll gift it to someone who enjoys a sweeter scent.

Hydrate Bath Soak (Bathologist)

“A luxury bath soak perfect for taking the chill out of a damp fall day and/or contemplating your latest work/personal adventure. We think these bath salts will make you and the world feel a bit more beautiful.”

We’ve got a run of damp, cooler days in the forecast over the next week, perfect time to try this soak. I opened the package for a sniff and the rosemary is lovely with the sweet orange.

Long Walks to the Library Socks (Blue Q)

“We adore these socks and know they will speak to your bookish heart. We also think both Eileen and Alice would love wearing these socks around the house and while working on their emails/writing. We hope yours take you on a delightful walk to your local library or Little Free Library.”

And these adorable socks! I can’t get over how cute they are. I’ve ordered socks, tea towels, gum and aprons from Blue Q a few times now but hadn’t seen this pair.

Who else thinks September’s Sweet Reads Box is amazing? I’m thrilled with the book choice and think they did a wonderful job curating high quality items to enjoy alongside. Treats for all of the senses!
