The Accio! Box Review October 2017

Accio! is the first and only artisanal subscription box 100% inspired by the Potterverse. Each Accio! Box is specially curated for adult fans by their team of certified Potterhead nerds. That means that they take great care in choosing only beautiful, high quality indie and handmade items that they would want to receive theirselves. They kindly sent us this box for review.

I have to admit……until about a month ago I had absolutely no interest in reading Harry Potter or jumping on the Potterverse train. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against it by any means, but it just always seemed like such a task, so many books to read and such a commitment. But, as soon as I discovered The Accio! Box I had a change of heart. I loved the idea of a subscription box focused specifically on a book. I was intrigued and challenge all at the same time. So, I did what any good reviewer would do……I purchased the complete collection from Costco, started reading it 4 days ago, and I am hooked!! So, it should come as no surprise that I was beyond excited to dig in to my first Accio! Box (Shonah reviewed the first one we received).

Here’s a closer look at the items we received in the October box…..

October Details

We LOVE October at Accio! Fall is our very favourite time of year, and we pretty much consider Halloween a festival month, so we really wanted to find an appropriately sinister theme for this box. When it comes to literary evildoers, it doesn’t get much scarier than the Death Eaters, and while they are unquestionably horrible, we also think their symbology and macabre aesthetics fits right in with spooky season. We hope you enjoy our creepy curation this month as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together for you.

Seeing as I am not quite through the first book, I wasn’t sure what the Death Eaters were until I looked it up. I am already familiar with Voldemort so I still feel like I will appreciate the items in this month’s box regardless. Let’s have a closer look……

Dark Magic Soy Candle ($18)

Highland bluff makes some of the best wizard-inspired candles, and we were so excited to collaborate with them on this one, which they developed just for this box! With the crisp, cool scent combination of eucalyptus and mint, this candle evokes a feeling of mystery and intrigue, like walking along the dark cobblestones in Knockturn Alley or exploring the Forbidden Forest at night. When the candle is gone, use the reusable jar to store your stash of eye of newt, wing of bat, or you know……cotton balls.

Candles are always a good idea. And when they fit the theme of the box, it’s even better!! This will be perfect for my entry table that is currently decorated for Halloween. It will also be fun to burn it while I enjoy some nighttime reading………which is what I plan on doing every night this weekend.

Dark But Darling Enamel Pin ($11)

It isn’t often that we open a box of merch and literally squeal with delight. Good thing Voldy and his pals didn’t use this as a recruiting tool, or we may have been tempted to sign up! This adorable glittery enamel pin from SuperCuteAwesomeStuff.com is, well……super cute. Tack it onto your favourite jacket or bag and prove to the world that evil can be positively precious.

Ohh….the product description gives me a little hint as to what I can expect in future books……I’m guessing Voldemort comes back and tempts some of the Wizards on to his side? Sorry, got a little sidetracked there. Any who, I am loving this pin. It fits the theme perfectly.

“Good & Evil” Quote Bookmark ($1.50)

Our friends Salazar’s House often get painted as the most dastardly ones on the block, but we believe evil can come from anywhere, just as good can come from any House. It was this idea that sparked the concept for these bookmarks, which look sharp in each house’s signature colors.

Dark (Book)Mark ($1.50)

Mark your place with this exclusive bookmark design in-house just for Accio! Features a glowing Dark Mark above a pine forest on one side, just like the scene at the Quidditch World Cup. The flip side depicts the Dark Mark spell set against a starry backdrop.

Here’s a little info on the Dark Mark, mostly for my knowledge rather than yours, seeing as I haven’t read too much about Voldemort and his gang yet:

The Dark Mark is the symbol of Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. It refers both to a magically induced brand that every Death Eater bears on his or her inner left forearm, and to the same symbol conjured in the air by the spell Morsmordre.

Voldemort Articulated Paper Doll ($17)

Kathleen Strawder’s hand-cut articulated paper dolls are something we have loved including since our very first box! Her beautiful illustrations really bring these iconic characters to life in vivid details, and Voldemort is no exception. Post him along with this articulated Nagini to bring some dark glamor to your bookshelf or bulletin board.

Eeek…..paper dolls are the best!! If I remember correctly, Shonah received one in the Accio! Box she reviewed and she really loved it. I think this might be something they include on a regular basis? I could be wrong, but I hope I’m not.

Dark Forces Notebook ($5.50)

Plot out all your evil deeds in this lined notebook from the Literary Emporium! It also works for grocery lists.

Another item I love to see in my subscription boxes. It’s absolutely perfect for the October box and it will definitely come in handy.

Bonus – Dark Mark Temporary Tattoo

This little extra makes for a neat addition to a Death Eater Halloween costume, or just a bit of fun for going out. To use, peel off the protective film and place the tattoo on your skin with the image side down. Apply a wet cloth or sponge to the back and saturate the paper, then hold in place for 60 seconds. Slide off the paper to reveal your new Dark Mark! Removes easily with baby oil.

The Accio! Box Review October 2017 – Final Thoughts

Oh my goodness! I enjoyed my first The Accio! Box more than I thought I would. I had so much fun going through the box and researching each item. At first I was a little worried. I thought that I wouldn’t appreciate the box unless I had read all of the books in the series, but that wasn’t the case at all. I actually really love that I get to enjoy this subscription while I read the collection. It just adds to the experience and makes reading the books that much more exciting. It’s also very appropriate that I started reading the books right before Halloween and that my first experience with The Accio! Box was the October box. I am absolutely thrilled and want to spend the next 4 days huddled up under the blankets, drinking tea, enjoying my Accio! Box items and finishing the first book…….and maybe the second. I am already excited for the next Accio! Box.

XOXO
