Unplugged Book Box Review January 2021

Unplugged Book Box is a monthly book subscription box with a focus on self care that has a bookish twist. Each month, subscribers receive a new release (published within 3 months of shipment) Young Adult or Adult fiction book plus 4 to 6 literature-inspired self care goodies.

They kindly sent us this box for review.

This is my first time reviewing Unplugged Book Box and I am super excited. I enjoy reading but never seem to find the time for it and I am way too indecisive to pick out a book for myself. I thought a book subscription will solve both of those problems! It will give me the motivation to read more plus someone else will pick out a book for me. Win win.

Subscription Details

Unplugged Book Box offers two options: a Young Adult book box or an Adult Fiction book box. Boxes cost $39.99 + shipping, with savings for longer term subscriptions. Each box will contain the book of the month plus 4-6 self care goodies that may include candles, shower or bath goods, tea or coffee, lip care, skin care, journals or notebooks, mugs, artwork or photography, bags, kitchen gadgets, baking kits, candy, bookish novelty products, and items that inspire creativity. Most items are sourced from small businesses.

Here is a closer look at the January Adult Fiction Unplugged Book Box:

The January 2021 theme is “Intuition”.

Each box comes with an information card listing all the items in the box. The card also gives details for the month’s photo challenge.

Love the journal prompts included with the box, I journal occasionally in my planner and prompts like these are great to have.

A Darker Shade of Magic Wallet

“In VE Schwab’s A Dark Shade of Magic series, magic is alive and the characters must rely on their intuition to fight against it. This wallet is exclusive to Unplugged and was designed by Anne Lambelet.”

As someone who has a boat load of cards and receipts in my bag all the time, a good sized wallet is a must. I love the design and colors on this.

The Night Circus Gloves

“The Night Circus has come to town. Celia and Marco are fated to a life of competition in this magical world created by Erin Morgenstern. They must use their intuition in performances, but fate seems to be testing them. These gloves are an Unplugged exclusive.”

These are perfect for winter! I usually favor fingerless gloves because it never gets too cold here in Vancouver, but I am happy to have these for when I go somewhere colder.

The 7 & 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Lotion

“Head to Blackheath Manor for a getaway of a lifetime, but if your intuition is no good, you may just get stuck there for longer than you bargained for. This lotion is inspired by Stuart Turton’s book and is an exclusive by Natural Pure Honest.”

This lotion has a lovely vanilla scent and can I say it smells AMAZING.

The Deep Bath Salt

“Yetu from The Deep by Rivers Solomon holds memories for her people. This stunning novel touches upon the intuition of her people; a group of underwater women that are descendants of slave women tossed overboard.”

These bath salts by The Fairy Hideout can also be used as a foot soak. These will be perfect to unwind and relax after a long day however you choose to use them.

The Picture of Dorian Gray Face Mask

“Throughout Oscar Wilde’s tale, Dorian ignores his intuition in favor of pleasures and riches. This has substantial consequences. Use this face mask to maintain your own youthful glow.”

I am obsessed with face masks and can’t wait to try this one out on my next self-care day.

The Unhoneymooners Lip Balm

“Olive from The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren does not have the best intuition. In fact, her intuition leads to some big lies that make her life far more difficult. This lip balm is inspired by her ‘unhoneymoon’ to Hawaii.”

Give me all the lip balms! They are a must for me during the colder season because my lips get dry and cracked so easily.

The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry

“Dellaria Wells, petty con artist, occasional thief, and partly educated fire witch, is behind on her rent in the city of Leiscourt – again. Then she sees the ‘wanted’ sign, seeking Female Persons, of Martial or Magical ability, to guard a Lady of some Importance, prior to the celebration of her Marriage. Delly fast-talks her way into the job and joins a team of highly peculiar women tasked with protecting their wealthy charge from unknown assassins.”

“Delly quickly sets her sights on one of her companions, the confident and well-bred Winn Cynallum. The job looks like nothing but romance and easy money until things take a deadly (and undead) turn. With the help of a bird-loving necromancer, a shapeshifting schoolgirl, and an ill-tempered reanimated mouse named Buttons, Delly and Winn are determined to get the best of an adversary who wields a twisted magic and has friends in the highest of places.”

Unplugged Book Box Review January 2021 – Final Thoughts

This is not the typical type of book I would pick for myself, but that’s the whole purpose of a book subscription, isn’t it? To have someone else pick out my books and get out of my usual a little more. This book sounds really intriguing and I can’t wait to sit down and read this, after a good long bath with the bath salts and some quality masking time. The goodies this month are perfect for the season and all fit the theme so well. I love my first Unplugged Book Box and am looking forward to what February has to bring already!
