Leather Belt Bag

“Create your own minimalist leather belt bag that can be worn several ways by adjusting the strap, or converted to an elegant clutch by removing the strap entirely. In this workshop, Klum House founder Ellie Lum guides us through the process of turning a pre-cut piece of vegetable-tanned leather into a stylish belt bag as we learn how to use rivets and work with leather. The assemble uses rivets only so there’s absolutely no sewing involved.”

The bag selected for this project is named the Balboa Belt Bag, after Balboa Avenue in Portland and San Diego, the home cities of Klum House and The Crafter’s Box. I am so excited for this! I am actually looking for a bag/clutch in a similar style, and now I get to make my own. Also love that there is no sewing involved, because I can’t sew to save my life. My husband does all the mending and darning around here because my sewing skills are just the worst.

Project Card

The first thing you will see in the box is a folded card describing the project and introducing the maker. It also lists all the materials inside the box, and any additional materials to have at home if needed. For this project, common household tools such as a hammer, scissors, and ruler are needed.

Tan Leather Piece and Strap

This kit includes two pieces of pre-cut vegetable tanned leather. The strap included measures 3/4 by 70 inches. I just love this pinkish beige shade! It is exactly the kind of colour I would pick out for myself when choosing a bag.

Center Bar Buckle and Rivets

The kit comes with all the rivets needed to assemble the pouch.

The brass/gold colour of the buckle and rivets complement the tan leather perfectly.

Dot Anvil and Drive Punch

The included tools in the kit are a dot anvil to assemble the rivets, and a drive punch to make precise holes in the leather.

Pattern Template

A pattern template for the bag is included, ready to be traced and transferred onto the leather.

The Crafter’s Box Review June 2022 – Final Thoughts

I think this month’s The Crafter’s Box project is my favourite one yet. I got to learn a craft that I am totally unfamiliar with and end up with a useful and practical end product. The video instructions make it all really straightforward and easy to learn. With a project like this, the value of a this subscription is really highlighted. I know nothing about leather crafting, and having all the needed materials pre-prepared makes it so much easier and convenient. I can only imagine the hassle if I were to have to source the leather pieces and finishings on my own. Highly recommend The Crafter’s Box to anyone who likes to try out new craft projects.
